about

The Story of Taiko Birth

In a time long ago the sound of the Taiko Drum could be heard in small villages across Japan. The sound spoke to the people of when to come together for food, gatherings and dance. Taiko could also be used as alarms to keep people safe from harm. The tradition of the drum was taught by 5 teachers in and around Hiroshima.

Then a terrible thing happened when all the world was at war. From a place far away high in the sky a machine was carrying a weapon that could destroy millions of acres of land, thousands upon thousands of people and animals and poison the land for generations to come. No Taiko drums were sounded as a warning. No one even knew that such an evil power could be unleashed.

In the silence of that moment the loudest weapon of destruction made its voice known. Few living things survived and those that did would face the future effects of the poison that covered the landscape.

Five Taiko teachers had lived but now only one survived. The Taiko drum which had echoed across the land was now silent.

People forgot about the power of the drum that had served the villages. The sound of the drums could not be heard throughout the lands anymore. One Taiko teacher searched for the other four teachers and none could be found. In the silence of the landscape he knew we was even more alone.

As fate would have it the place called America where the destructive bird in the sky had come was a place of new beginnings for people from all lands. This last Taiko teacher heard the music of American Jazz players and knew that he needed to go and be a part of this new sound. Even though this was the place were the bird had come from, it was time for the Taiko drum to be heard there as well. It is in America that the Taiko drum was reborn in the home of Jazz, and began its new journey to many new lands and people.
